What Does Real Safety Look Like?
Residents deserve to feel safe in their homes, on their streets, and in their parks — regardless of what neighborhood they live in. But "public safety" means different things to different people, and effective policy must address the full picture: crime prevention, emergency response, mental health crises, and community trust.
Pravesh's approach to public safety is grounded in one core belief: the strongest communities are those where residents and public servants work together, not against each other.
Pravesh's Public Safety Framework
Responsible, Accountable Policing
Pravesh supports a well-funded, well-trained police department that is accountable to the public it serves. This includes:
- Regular community liaison meetings between police command and neighborhood associations.
- Transparent use-of-force reporting published quarterly and accessible online.
- Expanded de-escalation and crisis intervention training for all officers.
- A strengthened, independent civilian review board with real investigative authority.
Investing in Prevention
The most effective way to reduce crime is to address its root causes before incidents occur. Pravesh will advocate for:
- Youth jobs and mentorship programs that give young people positive pathways.
- Streetlight and park improvements in high-crime corridors to deter opportunistic crime.
- Violence interruption programs staffed by trusted community members.
Mental Health and Crisis Response
A significant share of police calls involve individuals experiencing mental health crises, substance use issues, or homelessness. Sending an armed officer as the default response doesn't always serve the situation well. Pravesh will push for a co-responder model that pairs trained mental health professionals with officers for appropriate calls, reducing risk for everyone involved.
Improving Emergency Services
Faster response times save lives. Pravesh will work to ensure fire stations and EMS are adequately staffed and equipped in every part of the city — not just wealthier neighborhoods.
Building Trust Across All Communities
Public safety cannot be achieved without trust. Pravesh is committed to hosting regular neighborhood safety forums where residents can raise concerns, meet their local officers, and shape the priorities of community policing. When residents feel heard, they become partners — and that partnership is the most powerful tool we have.
